AIR JORDAN 6 : ITS HISTORY
Unveiled in 1991, the Air Jordan 6 was designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield. It is this designer who is behind the designs Air Jordan from the 3 to the XV. It is by wearing the Air Jordan 6, six years after the release of the Air Jordan 1 Michael Jordan won his first NBA Championship title and Finals MVP with the Chicago Bulls against Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers.
At the time of release, the Air Jordan 6 was available in five different colorways, led by the legendary White Infrared and Black Infrared.
A SNEAKERS NIKE CLEAN DESIGN
In an effort to always go the extra mile and design the best possible pair for His Airness, Tinker Hatfield redoubled his efforts on the Air Jordan 6. Far from, for example, the classic design of the Air Jordan 1 Mid and the Air Jordan 1 High.
At the request of Michael Jordan himself, Hatfield set about building a cleaner model in terms of both style and material. For MJ, the reference being the Italian shoe built with a single yoke and single material. To meet the needs of the American superstar, the Oregon-based designer then made the Air Jordan 6 a better finished and lighter model. Instead of leather, he used suede, a synthetic leather. The inserts even have a "23", a reference to Michael's number Jordan. Because of the loss of breathability caused by this suede, the man who started at Nike by designing the Air Jordan 3 chose to make perforations on a large part of the model.
Several parts are very worked, as the heeltab and the tongue. For the first time, a shoe Air Jordan integrates a heeltab. Located at the back of the sneaker, this small strap makes lacing faster and more convenient. This piece was inspired by the Spoiler of the Porsche of Michael Jordan. This strap will be later revisited but finally forgotten starting at the Air Jordan 11.
Designed in integrated neoprene, the tongue has also been particularly worked. It has two openings that allow the foot a better support and better breathing. On the other hand, the Air Jordan 6 is the last pair to have a visible air bubble on the midsole.
THE COLLABORATIONS OF THE JORDAN 6
Certainly less popular than some other basketball models of the brand, the Air Jordan 6 has also had its share of collaborations. For its first joint work, the AJ6 collaborated with young patients through the Doernbecher program in 2009.
Thereafter, the Jumpman showcased the Air Jordan 6 through collaborations with Jordan Motorsports, Macklemore, Slam Dunk manga or even Gatorade between 2010 and 2017.
More recently, Jordan Brand has worked on its number 6 model with Aleali May(spring 2019), PSG(summer 2019) or Levi's in 2020. But the most talked about collaboration concerning the Air Jordan 6 was the one with the American rapper Travis Scott in 2019, one year after the Air Jordan 4. Released in two colors, the British Khaki and the Medium Olive, this Air Jordan 6 has the particularity of having small snap pockets on the sides.
JORDAN 6 RETRO
Nine years after its first release in 1991, the Air Jordan 6 was revived with the release of the first Retro models in 2000. Then, in 2002, the Air Jordan 6 will make its return, in a low top version.
